  • American Airlines and Delta Air Lines planes nearly collide at JFK Airport; FAA investigating
    Updated On: Jan 16, 2023

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating a near-collision two commercial airplanes had at John F. Kennedy International Airport on Friday.

The FAA said preliminary information shows a Delta Air Lines Boeing 737 came to a safe stop on a runway at the airport "after air traffic controllers noticed another aircraft crossing the runway in front of the departing jetliner" around 8:45 p.m.

Preliminary analysis showed Delta Air Lines Flight 1943 stopped its takeoff roll approximately 1,000 feet before reaching where an American Airlines Boeing 777 had cross from an adjacent taxiway, the FAA said.

Delta said in a statement to USA TODAY its flight destined to Santo Domingo Airport stopped safely on the runway and returned to the gate following the incident. The flight, which had 145 customers and six crewmembers on board, deplaned.

The flight was delayed overnight due to crew resources, Delta said, and customers were provided overnight accommodations. The flight departed the following morning at 10:17 a.m. and landed in Santo Domingo just over four hours later, according to FlightAware data

“The safety of our customers and crew is always Delta’s number one priority. Delta will work with and assist aviation authorities on a full review of flight 1943 on Jan. 13 regarding a successful aborted takeoff procedure at New York-JFK. We apologize to our customers for the inconvenience and delay of their travels," Delta said in the statement.

The American Airlines flight departed JFK Airport on time and arrived at its London destination on time, according to FlightAware data. American Airlines told USA TODAY it would refer to the FAA for comment on the incident.
